Map Orientation / Direction Up
Hi,
I'm not shure if it's perhaps a bug - otherwise it may be added as a nice feature...
When I set my map orientation "direction up", it works fine until I stop moving. As soon as the GPS detects no more movement, the orientation rotates to north up. As soon as I start moving again, the orientation rotates back.
Is it possible to leave the orientation in the last state when stopping?
In my car the compass mode isn't always reliable, so having an direction orientated map is mostly the better option.
And if it's a bug: I have a X10i with Android 2.1 update 1, no branding.

Hi;
may be your gps is sending heading=0
not sure if OruxMaps can distinguish between true/false 0 heading.
I will do some test

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
Hi Orux,
This happens to me too.
I'm running HTC Desire HD Android V2.2.1
Oruxmaps V3.5.7beta
It is especially annoying if using the new feature of 'Cursor to bottom' and I'm travelling south and I stop at a junction to check which way to go.

Hi orux.
I Have the same issue. Everytime I stop oruxmap lose the map direction up. Is there a way to workaround this issue.
Many thanks in advance.

Orux,
is there any developments on this subject?
Do you recommend any workaround? I very much need the direction up, but when I stop the Map turns to North up, and everything became a mess!!
thanks

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
Hello,
I have the same problem. When I start oruxmaps, the cursor shows always to direction "north", even if I turn my smartphone. I go some steps and the cursor shows to the right direction in the map. But when I stop going, the cursor shows to direction "north" and stays until I have gone some steps again.
Is it intended, that the cursor moves only when the user(smartphone) has changed the position? Or it's a problem of my smartphone (Sharp SH80F)?
For me it would be great when the cursor shows to the new direction when I turn the smartphone without going some steps.
Best regards
brider

Lose map direction up when I stop
Hello,
I have the same problem (phone: Sony Xperia Neo). Everytime I stop oruxmap rotate the map out of direction up
After having stopped, probably for the following GPS-measurements (though not moving) each determines a new position (the measured position jumps due to GPS inaccuracy a few feet back and forth), and the map rotates supposedly in the new direction of movement.
In the navigation program "m2g" MagicMaps was solved so that you could adjust the movement speed (mph), up to the card is not to be rotate, for example 3 mph
Best regards

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
Orux,
Please, is it planned to develop a way to hold last "direction up" map's orientation during a stop?
It is highly needed and there is already more users requesting that.

Bruno Jacinto

Yes that is exactly what is needed to make it work useful.
I hope Orux takes on the topic

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
Hi everybody,
last year I posted a suggestion that might help for this issue.See here.
I think that falling back to compass mode, when the GPS mode is not giving a clear and stable direction, would help against erratic map rotation.
Anyway, it might be difficult to implement and deciding wether a GPS-Movement is erratic or real is not very easy...
Cheers

Compass mode, at least on my bike, is completely unreliable (even after many calibrations) because the phone is mounted too close to the metallic frame of the bike. So I think this could be useful for hiking, but not for biking, at least not for my steel bike.

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
That's one of the reasons why I am using GPS-mode on a bike. And even without metallic objects around the compass mode is very inaccurate on my Defy.fabrylama wrote:Compass mode, at least on my bike, is completely unreliable (even after many calibrations) because the phone is mounted too close to the metallic frame of the bike.long-E-dude wrote:Hi everybody,

But if you don't move, it is more accurate than GPS-mode and at least it is quite stable, so you don't have erratic map rotation effects.
I don't say my suggestion is the best idea since the invention of sliced bread. I am even not sure if it can be implemented at all, just take it as some brain storming....

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
I understand, but I'm pretty sure this problem isn't difficult to solve, it "only" needs some time, the right algoritm and some testing: someting like if speed<something then heading=average of the last N valid (with speed>something) headings.
I believe the only reason why Orux didn't solve this immediately, is because he has a lot of bugfixes/new features to implement that are above this one in the priority list, and this can be a little tricky do right at the first try because of the many context to consider.
We'll just have to wait and thank Orux for his fantastic work

Hi;
please, test last beta--> www.oruxmaps.com/cs
if speed < 0.25m/s, the bearing value should be ignored. I think it is a good solution.

Re: Map Orientation / Direction Up
v.5.0.3beta5
Hi Orux,
This works very well. A quick conversion, 0.25m/s =
0.9 km/h
0.56 mph
0.48 kn
If the GPS doesn't have good reception, the screen still rotates around because of the big position changes. But with good reception, it is rock solid!
