track scribble
Orux Maps v4.8.35 (and previous version)
CyberNav Mini (cheap Chinese android 2.2 tablet with a decent gps chip)
relevant settngs:
track:
auto-save 2min
default track type: offroading
gps:
min time 2sec
min distance 10m (when set to 0sec, 5m, problem seemed much worse)
accuracy for positon fix 20m (this was an attempt to fix problem - made no real difference, at least not enough to resolve the problem)
Issue:
The track (on-screen and exported to gpx) looks like it was drawn by my 2-year old son. Seriously, it looks like a mess of scribbles - point to point, places I didn't go to. I've also tried Androzic and the tracks from that are fine.
It all started from this:

where Androzic is in blue and Orux is in red. This is with the default track/gps settings and the problem is that it is too course. It does not give enough detail to map the trail. So, I bumped it up (0sec and 5m, I think) and got this:

Again, Orux in red, Androzic in blue, though not exactly the same route.
So, my last attempt was to upgrade Orux and set to 2sec, 10m. With that, I got this:

Again, Orux in red, Androzic in blue.
Thus, the Androzic track is great, right from the start and with no issues. It looks like any track I'd expect to see from a GPS. Unfortunately, the Androzic interface is not very friendly to gloved biker hands. I would much prefer to use Orux as I love it's interface (especially the big buttons with auto-hide) but I need better track recording.
Is there a magic setting I'm missing? Is this really a bug?

Hi;
It seems a crazy gps

Use:
minimal time --> 0 seconds. This will force the GPS chip to be 'on' always.
When you recorded the tracks, was Androzic and OruxMaps working simultaneously?
If not, try using them simultaneously.

solved
Hi,
I actually figured this out today. Well, I sucessfully tested today - like 2 hours ago.
It is a magic-setting problem.
Specifically, it is the GPS fast/default/power-save mode setting. If it's set to 'fast', the problem goes away. It says 'fast' is always on.
I suspect Orux was trying to get its position from the GPS before the GPS was ready and getting junk information, which it then recorded in the track.
Thus, I'm very happy, especially now that I've figured out how to make custom dirtbiker-specific maps via osmosis->josm->maperitive->mobac->orux. Documentation for this coming soon

happy, happy!
Just a follow-up...

Best track I've ever seen from a GPS. Orux ROCKS!
0 seconds, 5 meters, and I also seem to have to go into tweaks -> GPS, and enable FAST mode. It doesn't seem to stick otherwise. I'll confirm this before putting in a feature request

Re: track scribble
What impact do the settings you are using have on battery life?

Can't say, for a couple of reasons:
First, I'm running the tablet on vehicle power. It only has a 2-hr battery life otherwise, which makes it pretty useless. Also, it is very poor at power management and runs hot all the time. Second, the CyberNav I'm running always seems to only get 2-hrs on the battery no matter if the GPS is running or not. While I've not explicitly tested it, I doubt these settings would make any difference on this particular device. Of course, if you have a device that actually attempts to do power management, the settings might be important.
Further, it appears I was wrong about needing the 'FAST' setting. If it is set to 0-sec, 5-meters, the tracks come out fine. I guess I made a mistake in my testing with the first post. Thus, no bug, nothing to fix, no features to add, and a very satisfied user.
