More than one mapstyle for a map
Hi Orux,
since the recent introduction of mtb:scale (mtb difficult scale) and sac:scale (hiking difficult scale) in openandromaps, I started fiddling with the xml themes, to create a good compromise. Soon noticed that's impossible to have a good theme for both hiking and biking, it would be much better to have two separate themes, but Orux only support one theme for every map. In the meantime I simply added a second map (with a different filename) with it's mapstyle.
Would be possible to add support for multiple themes on a single map? Maybe the naming of the xml could follow a rule like (for Italy.map) Italy.map-mtb.xlm and Italy.map-hike.xml or maybe you could check the path of the mapfile and the mapstyle, to see if are in the same directory and ignore the naming, this way we could use one map and several xml.
Thanks
Fabrizio

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
This is a feature I would also much appreciate. (Also because of OpenAndroMaps / MTB:scale and different maps fo hiking vs. biking. There is so many info in Openstreetmap that it doesn't fit into one theme with a clear view on small screens)

Hi Orux,
These are realy good news
Would it be possible to add custom symbols/patterns too, actually a lot of symbols are missing in standard mapsforge lib.
I would highly appreciate to see a solid theme swiitcher in my favorite app.
If you wand to see whats possible with mapsforge visit www.openandromaps.org
(its no advertisement, the maps are free!!)
best regards
Christian

UP
Hi Orux,
Is there a chance that we will see a themeswitcher for mapsforge with custom symbol/patterns?
I hate to constantly add new features in my maps for Locus only.
Dont get me wrong - I dont earn my living with the openandromaps, the donations cover the costs of the projekt plus a very few bucks for paddling, not more. So I dont want you to drive my (non existing ) business.
I love Oruxmaps and used it from beginning on and want to support the APP with maps. A themeswitcher + custom symbols would make live much, much easier both for me and your big fan-community.
Edit: most important too would be relative paths to symbols/patterns folders

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
UP, UP, UP!
For me, Oruxmaps + Openandromaps change the world of offline outdoor navigation. I'm not a fun of big words, but this dream team is simply the best one from both free or paid apps, so you guys really deserve our donations or at least our thanks for your work. This is my opinion and I am sure I'm not the only one.
At this moment, a themeswitcher for mapsforge with custom symbols is the most important step to bring this dream team to a higher level, and to make us, your fans, really happy.
So UP UP UP :-)

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
I second this request above anything else. The biggest limitation (actually the only real one) I find in Oruxmaps+OpenAndroMaps is the complete lack of alpine passes' names, which are an important item to see on maps. Custom symbols would allow to show this, since data is already present in the maps. Also the ability to switch between themes would allow to have different renderings for different needs (eg. a dark one to save battery with OLED displays on longer trips).

I did this bevore but it does'nt make real sense because with all neccessary overlaping of maps you save only about 70MB.

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
Hi, I would also love to see this feature. On my trips, I'm constantly switching mapstyles, because the standard theme displays also shop names, while the bike theme displays the routes. It's really annoying to kill oruxmaps, rename the themes in the file browser, restart oruxmaps. ...
Even a switcher without local icons would be a big win for me.
I think it has no sense to couple the maps with the theme as it is now. I would prefer to have a single folder with all the map themes and a button in the sidebar to choose from them. In the maps by Christian, all themes are identical for different countries, but my map folder is cluttered with xml files just to get this managed.
Thanks for the very nice tools, you both!

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
I'v provided a complete set of the new openandromaps themes with optimized folder structure for download:
www.openandromaps.org/wp-content/files/themes/orux_new/themes_orux_new.zip
Unzip the contents to /oruxmaps/mapstyles/ or a subdirectory like /oruxmaps/mapstyles/OAM/ (don't forget the /patterns /symbols folders) for the switching themes look at the oruxmaps site: http://www.oruxmaps.com/cs/
Its easy, works perfect, enjoy!

The Themes include mountain_pass=yes with usual symbol, this tag is already included in the maps.
The tower=observation and tower=communication that is defined in the theme will be operational with the next update, the tags are not included in maps right now.
I would kindly ask you take a look at the barriers, maybe you have symbols for this - its possible from now on in Oruxmaps.
And maybe... there might be some tags missing that you are used with oruxmaps - the new themes are derivates from Locus...
Best regards,
Christian

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
Wow that was fast! Thank you very much. I'm on a bike tour through eastern Europe right now and could get the beta version via Wifi. This is immediately useful to me! The only thing I'm wishing for is an icon which I can put into the sidebar.

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
Hi Christian, everything seems to be working as expected, I made a quick diff between the old and the new theme and all the tags seems to be present.kech61 wrote: Hi Fabrizio,

Regarding the barriers, I don't use symbols because they are not as visible as the red/green circles I use. I understand that, from a first time user point of view, it's not obvious what they mean, but a first time user can simply look at the map legend:D
Furthermore I looked but I didn't find any nice symbols for the barriers, since neither opencyclemaps nor openmtbmaps renders them.
Thank you again
Fabrizio
PS. Could you also add barrier=stile in the theme (you already added it in the mapfile)? It should go with barrier=chain|lift_gate

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
I have spotted these circles on the map, but could not make any sense of it. I don't like them, because a they don't resemble a barrier, and b they are much too intrusive with the vivid colour (pure green and red). When I'm back from my trip, I can draw icons for them. But I don't yet understand, what is the difference. Could you provide a link or photo of the different barriers?

Re: More than one mapstyle for a map
Hi, I understand your frustration, probably is better to show barriers only to the mtb theme and not on the hike and bike.auriocus wrote:I have spotted these circles on the map, but could not make any sense of it. Anyway, here's the general list with description of barriers
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:barrier
The supported barriers are:
-bollard: in the current theme is a small grey circle
-lift_gate, chain, cycle_barrier, stile: in the current theme a red and green circle
-gate: in the current theme a red and grey circle.
The reason for the different colors is that with the bollard you can keep riding the bike, with the lift gate/chain/etc you have to dismount and with the gate you probably have to stop and turn around.
