Wilderness Area map on internet (proprietary scrolling, but USFS), want on Orux
Hello all, I'm new to this forum but I've been researching this problem for the past few days.
Here is the website that contains a scanned map of the Marble Mountain Wilderness and Russian Wilderness in Northern California.
http://www.papermapsonline.com/home/NorthernCalifornia/MarbleMountainRussianWilderness.aspx
It is a USFS map from 2004, with good detail and hiking trails -- better than the USGS map server or USA Topo.
I'm not sure of the best way to import it into Oruxmaps for offline private use while hiking/backpacking. (Just so everyone knows, we do own the paper version of this map legally somewhere, but it's a bit ratty.)
So far, this is the only method that I've made any progress with:
Download a chunk of the map as a jpg (right click on the website).
Use the jpg to make a overlay map in Google Earth and export as kmz file.
Use mapc2mapc to write Androzic map+ozf2.
Convert that with Oruxmapsdesktop to Oruxmaps format.
Wow! That's cumbersome.
I thought that I might be able to use a KMZ overlay in oruxmaps, but that didn't work.
Other programs I tried were okmap, maptiler, etc.
So, I guess the best method is to save pieces of the map in jpg chunks by scrolling & right-clicking on the website, then combine them together with something like Gimp (on a Macbook Pro, don't have Photoshop or other software). Then I'll enter latitude/longitude data from the hashmarks on the map and scale around the edges. I'm not sure what to use for Datum and Projection. Thanks for any input.
Marcus

After looking at the map more carefully I found North American Datum of 1927 and Lambert Conformal projection, but oruxmapsdesktop wants a lot more data about the Lambert projection -- values that I don't have any clue about. Thanks.

Here are the oruxmap format files for Marble Mountain Wilderness (top 2/3) and Russian Wilderness in Northern California:
Link to zipfile: Russian Wilderness
Link to zipfile: Marbles
I messed up zoom on the 34th tile while scrolling through the website to build the Marble Mountain map, but the major lakes and most popular areas are included. Enjoy!
