digital compass Empty digital compass

Post  christian Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:54 pm

Dear developer,
First of all I would like to mention how extremely useful I find oruxmaps. If you would offer a different method than paypal to contribute I would happily do so.

1) My Nexus One has a digital compass. This is used in Google Maps to display an arrow at the GPS location pointing to the current viewing direction. This is a great feature I am missing in oruxmaps. I mean its really useful. When you are at a junction and can just turn and know at which path you are looking.

2) When cycling I have an extra accu connected to the smartphone. So energy consumption is not an issue. I configured the phone to not shut down when an power supply is connected. But still the display decreases its brightness after a short period of inactivity. I googled and found that there is an application that fakes user interaction to keep the display bright all the time. Could this be integrated into oruxmaps directly? This might be of lower intersted than the digital compass issue.

Ok. Sorry. I found that feature. The question noe would be why I can only choose "compass+map rotation" (its Kompass+Kartenausrichtung on my german phone). The compass is a bit annoying. A little arrow just as in google maps would be sufficient.

I just also found the display active feature. Track log mode ...

ok, there was a problem with my compass calibration. is there a chance the arrow could get the compass feature in a coming release?

Hello Orux,

I'm just testing Maverick. It has a lot of drawbacks compared to oruxmaps but the advantage of the
arrow using the digital compass is reeealy nice.
I figured that you loose the orientation if the whole map is always rotating.
It must be not very difficult to implement, since the compass feature is still included.
So, I BEG you to add this feature in release 3.0! (It would be worth a donation for me too!)
I am using oruxmaps every time I'm offroad with my bike bounce

Please give at least an answer...

Hi, stormtro;

Just added a compass arrow in the last beta; have you tried this version? not sure if you are talking about this kind of compass.

Hi Orux!

The little compass is neat but thats not what I meant. But neverless, thank you for taking my request seriously.
I don't want a new arrow I want the existing arrow to turn. It's already turning but using the direction of my movement and not the digital compass.
That means, if I'm on a road crossing I cannot just turn my phone to see which direction is right.
I think images say more than words: digital compass Maverick_1.2.0

hold my promise and donated 20 bugs some days ago.
I did some testing in "the wild", and it works like a charm.
There are only two things I have to mention:

1. the compass is jumping around when riding on a rough surface. A adjustable average-over-time setting would be nice (or smth like it).
2. It seems that the compass has a systematical error of some degree. don't know if it is caused by a mis-calibration or because of a oruxmaps-drawing failure.
(tested with v2.9.7)

One question: is the displayed viewing angle a measure of the compass precision or an arbitrary value?

one more thing: why using "view angle (on)" and Compass (on)" in "tweaks"?
I need both for what i want, but don't see what they can do alone!

Hi, stormtro;

1. I will study a solution. For now, I have started testing with my old htc dream, putting it in the blender, to reproduce the problem Wink

2. try 2.9.10beta. Added magnetic declination correction.

The displayed angle is arbitrary.

Hi,

'view angle' depends on 'compass'.

you have to enable 'compass' to see the 'view angle', but you can not see 'view angle' alone.

if map-mode is "compass+map orientation" the map is still rotating even Compass is off. So it seems to me a little bit inconsisitent.
I also don't believe that switching off compass is necessary at all.
If an mode is activated that needs the compass it's, compasss will be activated otherwise not. (?or is there a use case for it?)

"magnetic declination correction" is not an option to activate, right?
I will check later if compass is working more precise...

digital compass Empty analog compass and radar

Post  valery Thu Oct 07, 2010 10:47 am

Hi Orux,
I think it would be great to have a view without map but with a compass and radar like in application StatusGPS or incorporate StatusGPS to Oruxmaps like it is done in RMaps. When I am heading to a specific waypoint, I find it much convinient observe a radar-like (StatusGPS) view on my device to check bearings.
Do you have in plans something like this?

I don't see a way to activate the >compass< view as default. It seems only be available within >Tweaks<.
I always use it, so it would be great to have this option within >preferences< !
