Importing NOAA nautical charts into Orux Empty Importing NOAA nautical charts into Orux

Hi,

Just thought I'd put a quick "how to" up for anyone interested in getting NOAA charts into their adroid device via Orux. Note: I use linux on my computer and the steps below are free...windows may need a paid ap to do the conversion, not sure.

1) convert the .kap files in the NOAA bsb folders to .tiff using GDAL or equivalent (I use GDAL as it's in the Ubuntu repositories) A sample GDAL script to do this is part way down this page:

<A HREF=" BSB</A>

Note: my link may not show up on this post...You may have to search for it by googling "NOAA/MAPTECH/NDI/SoftChart BSB"

2) convert the .tiff to .jpeg using GIMP (or equivalent). Pick 2 points on opposite corners of the chart noting lat/long and pixel location using the grid sliders on the edge of the gimp screen.

3)load the chart .jpeg into Orux desktop and calibrate using the 2 points located in step 2, choosing the zoom levels you want to use.

What a great ap! Thanks.
