Mapcalibrator zooming out to world on first OK

I was hoping to correct for the problem georeferencing some topo maps that I had converted to Oruxmaps in the Desktop. They were roughly 1 km out of position. But once I clicked the ok button after selecting the map calibrator, the map zoomed out to the level 2 and would not let me zoom back in. If I hit the second ok, all maps were broken just showing blank screens of various uniform colors depending on the map choice. I am guessing that they were georeferenced right into the ocean.
