Hi Jose,

I have been using OziExplorerCE for 7 years (on my PocketPC/Windows Mobile PDA/phone) and it was my favourite mobile application, as I always do a lot of outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, etc. Now, that I am using android, oruxmaps has become my "killer app."

What I am still missing is some way of fast offline route planning with the mobile device. I use to be somewhere in the mountains, foreign country, no internet access (too expensive abroad), trying to plan a hiking trip for the next day. Trip planning is often an ad hoc activity, so I cannot create every route/track in advance at my home PC.
With Ozi, I would enter track creation mode, and use my stylus to create a track point with a single tap, so a track of 200 points could be constructed easily in a few minutes. I don't know, how to achieve that efficiently with my android phone. Creating lots of waypoints with oruxmaps requires too much effort.

I considered to use Apemap or Google MyTracks for track creation, but the former does not support .gpx or .kml and the latter is not usable offline.
Can you help?

Best regards, and thanks for your excellent work!
Michael

Hi MicJ Hoy,

Did you try in the application settings, 'Create waypoints automatically'? With this setting, you don't need to enter the properties of a waypoint when you create one. I think this can help you.

Hi, Michael;

Asperge's right. Without a pointer, it is not easy to create accurate wpts using capacitive screens. In the way that says Asperge, routes can be created quickly.

Anyway, I will work in a more quickly way for creating routes.

In general i would agree, but in this case, i think it's rather easy to create accurate wpts. If you use 'normal' or 'direction up' cursors, you see exactly where the way point will be created. For the 'direction up' cursor, there is a small dot in the center, and in the normal cursor it's the center of the cross. In the 'create waypoints automatically' mode, you just have to scroll the map where you want to create the waypoint, and click on the 'create waypoint' icon. But anyway it's true that with stylet, it's faster.

Thank you both for your advice. This was, what i was looking for!

Some remarks:

- In fact, I never read the documentation completely: No time! Programs need to be as much self-explanatory as possible. I find the option "automatic waypoints" a little bit misleading, because i want to create waypoint manually. Thus. I din't even look, what function was behind it.

- If I use this method to create a route, I can place waypoints with sufficient exactness. My problem: I use my right hand to create waypoints. The button is imho not in the optimal position, since the finger is likely to obscure the curser position in the moment I push the button. For this reason, I would prefer to have the button at the left side or the bottom, or at least a little bit beyond the current position. A left-handed user, of course, might be very content.

- I have ordered a stylus to try out, if it helps to create routes faster or more exactly. I am sceptic, but I will report the results.

P.S.: I have been playing around a little bit with the new beta 2.7: Bravo! I have never seen another application, that advances it's functionality and usability that fast.

I have not much time, but: If you have a user documentation, which is to a certain degree stable, I would offer you my help in translating it to german
(from spanish or english)

O.K., I was a little bit too fast with my opinion about the position of the "create waypoint" button. I have changed my technique, working with two fingers now:
My left thumb places the waypoints while I move the map with my right hand. Works perfectly!

Offline route planning/ track creation without PC Empty Proposal for manual track creation

Post  MicJ on Tue May 18, 2010 11:55 am

Hi orux,

I did several experiments with manual route/track creation. I believe, that the fastest possibe way of creating several points is to have a "point creation mode", where every tap places a new point at the cursor position. Ozi or apemap work that way. If I could alter the oruxmaps interface, I would like to turn on "track creation mode" by a long press of the "add waypoint" button, and turn it off by a short press of this button. So I could choose between the "one shot" waypoint creation which is already built in, and the new functionality, which supports the creation of several point in a more efficient way.

With the finger i wonder if it would be precise enough. I've some doubts! At least with my large fingers Wink

The waypoint position is NOT determined by the finger position. You can tap anywhere on the display. The cursor position, i.e. the center of the display, is the position of the new waypoint. Try it out with ape@map, it works fine.
