Extensionwise, Openstreetmap-use (OSM)
Try to begin with Oruxmaps, to get hold on it as a program:
on reading the manual I get a slight feeling that .map extension is not the used extension in/for Oruxmaps?
PNG is an image extension, as far as I am now, OSM gives a format like PNG, to be exported (which does not succeed by me), OPenstreetmap is not mentioned in the english manual but MOBAC....why not?
thanks for helping the gate..

Sorry for my bad english
The .map extension use many aplication (OSM, OSM Mapsforge, Ozi ...). Not all god. You have several options (OSM offline maps).
1. Simply use OruxMaps to create offline maps (Open online OSM map -> Select "Create map" button -> Select area -> Slect zoom level -> OK) Is described in the manual.
2. These vector .map formats are good for you:
http://www.openandromaps.org/downloads
http://download.mapsforge.org/
http://openmaps.eu/download?format=mapsforge
bye

Thanks, could read the text.
Two questions to you: what is better (saving battery-wise, we have enough Gb power): a Mapforgemap (.map) or the selfcreation (inside Oruxmaps)? The Oruxmaps-maps are not vectorial??
What does this mean, how to use: http://www.openstreetmap.org/? This is where I found the .PNG etc.
After chosing Export you can select your region: then you have to Export the map, see bottom of the page: here I fail: don't know where to address: gives Error message all the time, whatever size, no Android connected.
I hope you know?....
Thanks if so.

1. The vectorial map are many zoomlevel, small size. Oruxmaps format are SQLite database (in it PNG or JPG tiles and map calibrated files), larger size, nice view.
2. The openstrretmap.org is a tile server (a lot of PNG tiles). You export just a PNG picture, not associated calibration (coordinates).
Use your smartphone to Oruxmap, Map Creator.
Or try this: Terra Incognita http://www.zubak.sk/TerraIncognita/
You can create Ozi map, then you can create Oruxmap mapsformat (with OruxMaps Desktop) http://www.oruxmaps.com/descargas_en.html

O.k., o.k., but:
1. not completely understood: if I use: www.openstreetmap.org, do I have to connect the smartphone to the computer in other to be able to Export te selected region?
2. or: do I use www.openstreetmap.org on the phone Wifi/telecomm. wise and Export to ...... what?
3. Is Map-creator in Oruxmaps the "same" as www.openstreetmap.org?
4. Can you also zoom-in with the tile-structured maps?
5. What is more convenient: tile or vectorial, we are bikers, 70-80 km's/day, Europe?
6. As far as I could view instantly at home: the Mapforge map is rather vage, vage pale colours, the track
is in blue flashes, good seeable. I am worried because of the sun.
7. What is more economic battery wise of the GPS?
8. general question: 1 and 2 again: where do you Export your seleced mapregion to in Openstreetmap.org? Until now: Error, to big file, time not good, wait a while (you can wait the whole day): = no sense.
Thanks again.

1,2,8 It will not work!
You can download it from Oruxmaps app in smartphone. Here is a step by step "manual": http://www.erprint.hu/orux/untitled-1.jpg

Re: Extensionwise, Openstreetmap-use (OSM)
Thanks for all the suggestions for maps: many, too many, but a lot to choose. We did not try Oruxmaps-creator yet, (it is not my phone to begin with, etc.) only tested the GPS/track(next to the door)/map/red flash! GPS/follow track works fine at night: in the sun we find that the map-view is rather pale: adagium: just follow the blue flash-line!! Hope to find a nicer map..: any suggestions are welcome. The principle of tile versus vectorial I do understand, but not how it works out in reality...not yet.
One question: why does Openstreetmap 1,2,8 not work? Why not?
Thanks.
